The majority of nurse call systems on the market generally offer building wide solutions for the monitoring of internal or external doors to alert staff when someone has passed through them. However, this fails to take into account whether the client passing through is actually at risk – the system alarms whether they are in danger or not. eZone is fully customisable for each resident’s needs and alarms are only triggered to suit their specific care plan, saving staff members valuable time.

Staff Fob Advantages

Historically with nurse call systems, staff members are required to attend the room, push the reset button once to log them as present, then press the reset button again as they leave the room to clear the call down. In practice however, staff members tend to log into the room and then forget to log out which distorts the true time they spent with the resident and throws the call logging trail out of sync. With eZone, staff members wear a fob which tracks their movements around the building. When a call is raised and the staff member attends to the room, they are automatically logged as present and once they leave, they are automatically logged out. It’s quick, it’s easy and it’s fool proof.

• There is only one button on the call point and one button on the staff pendant. No more multiple button options to raise different call levels which can confuse staff and slow them down. Because eZone knows a staff member is present in each and every room, whenever they raise a call from the one button wall call point, this will always raise as an emergency call. The one button on the staff pendant will always raise an assistance call.
• Each staff fob can be coded with the staff members name to provide full accountability.

Resident Fob Advantages

• ‘Wandering alarm’ – each residents fob can be programmed to include their ‘safe areas’ and flag an automated alarm when they leave them. One resident may be at risk when they leave their bedroom, another may be at risk when they leave their wing, another when they leave the building and so on. Each fob is fully programmable to suit each resident’s needs and helps to provide a more personal level of care.
• ‘Lack of staff interaction’ – it is common practice for care homes to operate an hourly check during night times and compile a report on this. The Care Quality Commission is starting to query more and more what systems are in place throughout the day. With eZone, each resident pendant can be programmed to start a timer from the last time a staff pendant was in the same room. For example, if a staff member attends to a resident at 10am and you have instructed staff to check on this resident every 2 hours, a nurse call alarm will automatically be raised at 12pm.
• ‘Lack of movement’ – similar to the above alarm, an alarm can be created if a resident hasn’t left their bedroom during programmed day time hours. This alarm could be used to identify shy or more reclusive residents in order to improve their social interaction.
• ‘Potential conflict notification’ – eZone can raise an automated alarm when two residents of known animosity enter the same area to prompt a staff member to avoid confrontation.
• ‘Medication reminder’ – eZone can be pre-set with daily/weekly alerts to remind staff about medication, special dietary requirements, upcoming events, etc. as the alert is cancelled via staff pendant attending source of alarm an audit trail is created with time of attendance.
• ‘Fall alarm’ – every fob has a fall alarm built in which will raise an automatic alarm in the event of a fall.

Management Advantages

Because all of the staff and resident fobs can be tracked seamlessly in the background, trigger reports can be created for residents as mentioned above but also for staff members. Examples include:

• Automatic report of night shift activity can be e-mailed to a manager at the start of the day shift, allowing them to see what staff movement has occurred during the previous night.
• Identification of two fobs moving around together which may signify a staff member carrying a sleeping staff members fob to simulate false movement.
• Overuse of smoking areas, or other ‘break’ areas which the management may feel are being abused can flag up an alarm.
• Fully automated reporting for pre-set criteria can be implemented.
